Potluck is a lively, culturally rich vocabulary resource that invites learners into the world of North American food, cooking, and dining traditions. Through 24 photocopiable lessons, the book helps students build the language needed to talk confidently about preparing meals, shopping for ingredients, following recipes, understanding menus, hosting gatherings, and enjoying food in social settings. More than just a vocabulary text, Potluck provides a window into the culinary customs of the United States and Canada—how people cook, eat, celebrate, and connect through food.

Each lesson introduces essential words, phrases, and expressions connected to kitchen tools, cooking techniques, meal planning, flavors, textures, restaurant language, and everyday eating habits. Sample recipes and menus offer authentic examples of how food language appears in real-life contexts, helping learners understand both the practical vocabulary and the cultural meanings behind North American food traditions. Readings explore why certain dishes matter, how food is used in family and community events, and the way eating habits reflect values, history, and diversity.

Designed for flexibility, the photocopiable pages make it easy for teachers to use individual lessons for thematic units, seasonal celebrations, holiday lessons, or integrated-skills activities. Learners gain not only functional food vocabulary but also cultural literacy—an important part of thriving in English-speaking communities. An audio program reinforces listening and pronunciation, providing additional exposure to kitchen-related and culturally specific language.

Whether used in adult ESL classes, high school programs, newcomer courses, conversation groups, or community kitchens, Potluck brings language learning to life through one of the most universal—and enjoyable—topics: food.
