Overview

We the People is a clear and accessible introduction to the U.S. government and political system designed specifically for English language learners. Through carefully structured readings, this photocopiable book guides students step-by-step through the fundamental principles, institutions, and processes that shape civic life in the United States. Each chapter presents key concepts in plain, learner-friendly English, supported by vocabulary explanations and reading comprehension tasks that reinforce understanding.

Beyond essential civics knowledge, the book encourages students to think critically about democratic participation, rights and responsibilities, and the role of citizens in a diverse society. Discussion questions and pair/group activities help learners connect the content to their own experiences, building both language skills and civic awareness. The combination of approachable language, meaningful tasks, and rich content makes We the People an ideal choice for adult ESL programs, citizenship preparation courses, community-based education programs, and academic ESL classes covering U.S. history or government.

A free accompanying audio program provides models of fluent reading and accurate pronunciation, supporting listening comprehension and helping learners follow longer, content-rich texts.
